An Expert in the Field of Fibre
Dengie Horse Feeds began life as a farmers’ cooperative in 1968 and it’s still run under the same ethos today, supporting local farming, caring for the environment and enjoying strong links with the community. A Royal Warrant Holder since 2007, Dengie is the UK’s leading manufacturer of fibre-based horse feeds and the largest producer of alfalfa, which forms the basis of its extensive portfolio of products.
Alfalfa, an environmentally friendly crop with remarkable health-giving properties for horses and ponies, is harvested from fields in Essex and Lincolnshire, close to Dengie’s two production sites, where it is dried and mixed with other ingredients. Using home-grown raw materials helps Dengie to keep the miles the feed travels to a minimum, keeping everything as fresh as possible and allows easy traceability so that every bag of feed can be traced back to the field in which it was grown.
A Hardy Crop
A member of the pea and bean family, alfalfa is a hardy crop with long roots that enable it to weather some of the most challenging climatic conditions. It is also able to draw nitrogen from the atmosphere and put it back into the soil. This means that no additional fertilisers are needed and crops that follow in the field require less fertiliser too. Alfalfa is left in the ground for three years, providing cover for birds, insects and wildlife over the winter months.
A Healthy Feed
Alfalfa is a natural, healthy feed, rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, as well as protein and calcium. It is an important source of highly digestible fibre, which plays a key role in allowing horses to demonstrate innate eating behaviour and promoting gut health.
A Distinguished Brand
Dengie is a distinguished and prominent brand, with its Alfa-A, Hi-Fi and Healthy fibre feed ranges, trusted and respected by horse owners both in the UK and abroad. These fibre feeds play a frontline role in helping to manage conditions such as obesity, laminitis, colic and gastric ulcers.
At the Cutting Edge
The brand’s expert team of highly skilled nutritionists off er sound, knowledgeable advice to horse and pony owners seeking dietary help and information through the company’s feed helpline and regular yard visits. The team is led by Technical and Product Development Manager, Katie Williams, MSc (Dist), who is responsible for ensuring that Dengie’s collection of feeds remains at the cutting edge of equine nutrition.
Education sits at the heart of the Dengie story as it seeks to promote the importance of keeping horses and ponies in great shape by feeding them the diet that nature intended. It has been doing this for more than 40 years and there’s no doubt that it will be doing so for many, many more.
Dengie’s two latest products, Healthy Hooves Molasses Free and Healthy Tummy, are perfect examples of dietary innovation, each using the highest-quality ingredients and formulated to meet a specific need, following in-depth research and extensive trials.
