A Christmas Present for Remus Memorial Horse Sanctuary
9th January 2008
The festive season may well be behind us now but Dengie was still in the Christmas spirit when we recently made a donation to Essex based charity Remus Memorial Horse Sanctuary. Dengie Equine Nutritionist, Tracey Hammond has been working closely with Remus for 3 years and spoke at their "Elderly Horse Awareness Day" earlier in the year. Tracey says "it was lovely to be able to donate a late Christmas present to Remus, especially as the supplements given will be used to benefit every horse, pony and donkey that currently resides at the sanctuary".
Remus has also given their support to Dengie by trialling some feeds prior to launch, including the Natural Vitality Supplemetns that were launched in December 2006. With such a diverse array at the sanctuary the Remus horses and ponies also took part in a Dengie funded study conducted with Writtle College student Tracey Mann. The study investigated the effects of various fibre sources on total feed intake in horses and ponies with dental problems. Click here for more information on the study and go to May 2007 archive.
Remus Memorial Horse Sanctuary was founded in 1983 following the plight of REMUS, a stolen horse who was left to starve for four months before rescue. Today Remus has a combination of 54 horses, ponies and donkeys in their care that are all fed on Dengie, with a further 70 successfully re-homed. Remus rely soley on self funding and public donations to support their work at the sanctuary and Sue Barton, co-founder of Remus, says "they couldn't manage without the support of the 20 volunteers who help them in addition to their full time staff and that the donation from Dengie this winter was a lovely gesture".
Marigold (pictured) is just one of the several donkeys at the sanctuary. Marigold who has been at the sanctuary for 18 years is now in her twenties and suffers from Cushing's, laminitis and arthritis. Marigold is fed a diet that includes Dengie Alfa-A Lite and is just one of the many occupants of Remus that will benefit from the addition of Dengie's Natural Vitality Senior Vits & Mins and Natural Vitality Coat & Hoof to the ration.
Natural Vitality Senior Vits & Mins is a broad-spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement formulated specifically to meet the needs of the older horse or pony. Natural Vitality Senior Vits & Mins also contains the prebiotics FOS and MOS to support digestive health and added glucosamine for joint support as well as elevated levels of vitamin C, which is an important antioxidant for lung health.
Natural Vitality Coat & Hoof is formulated to be fed on top of a balanced diet to provide higher levels of certain ingredients and nutrients that are specifically linked to promoting good coat and hoof condition including alfalfa, omega-oils, biotin and zinc. Natural Vitality Coat & Hoof also contains Yea-Sacc for efficient fibre digestion.
As Marigold is fed a fibre only diet, as are many of the horses and ponies at Remus, adding Natural Vitality Senior Vits & Mins to her feed will provide a balanced ration, whilst also supporting her digestive health to encourage efficient feed utilisation and also support her arthritic joints as she continues to age. As Marigold has Cushing's disease her skin and coat condition can often look quite poor and many horses and ponies with Cushing's are often more susceptible to skin lesions and infections that can make them quite uncomfortable. Adding Natural Vitality Coat & Hoof to Marigold's balanced ration will help her skin, coat and hoof condition to be the best it can despite the problems that she has.
