Remember Your Pets this Halloween & Bonfire Night
28th October 2011
While many of us enjoy this time of year our animals aren’t always so enthusiastic about it. Extra care, thought and preparation are needed when it comes to the nights around Halloween and Bonfire Night.
Horses are naturally flight animals so tend to panic and want to bolt when hearing loud noises or seeing bright flashes. It’s preferable to stable your horses if they are kept in an area where you know that there are going to be fireworks, bonfires or displays.
While stabled it’s worth trying to distract them from all the noise by giving them something to keep them occupied. Hiding carrots and apples in a trug of Hi-Fi Original or Hi-Fi Lite has the added benefit of providing additional fibre as well as distracting them from the commotion outside.
If your horse reacts particularly badly they may experience loose droppings. Dengie’s Digestive Health Plus can be added to the feed to supply a combination of yeast, prebiotics and probiotics to help maintain a healthy population of micro-organisms in the digestive system.
Don’t forget your dogs, cats and small furries. While some dogs and cats take it all in their stride others can be terrified. Try to stay at home, close windows, doors and the curtains to help reduce the noise and flashes. Block off the cat flap so they can’t run outside should they get spooked.
Bring small pets inside or if you can turn outdoor hutches to face a wall or a fence to help minimise the bangs and flashes.
If your horse or pet is particularly scared of loud noises and flashes, now is the time to speak to your vet about the best way to address the problem.
