Case Study: Alfa-A Balancer for Eventing
Tor Ness the Laid Back Sports Horse
Tor Ness aka Scoobie, is a 16.3hh Sports horse who competes in BE Novice level competitions. He is quite a good doer and is also very laid back which has meant that his owner Lucy has found it difficult to find a balance between keeping his weight down and giving him more sparkle. His diet prior to trying the balancer was Hi-Fi Original with a small amount of competition mix – feeding any more just made him spookier rather than more energized!
Recommended diet: 2 kgs Alfa-A Lite, 650gms Alfa-A Balancer, Dengie Naked Oats when required.
On his new diet Lucy found that Scoobie had more controlled energy and was more willing to go forward. It is a very common approach to feed less than the recommended amounts of a mix either to control weight or avoid fizzy behaviour. This means that the diet isn’t balanced and just correcting the imbalance can improve the horse’s energy levels. This was exactly the case with Scoobie as Lucy described him as being more willing to do the work asked of him. Lucy commented that she liked the fact that Alfa-A Balancer felt more like a feed than a balancer as it meant that Scoobie had more to eat.
