Case Study: Alfa-A Oil - Needing Condition

Harvey is a 9-year old, 16.2hh ID cross who was brought by Lynn and her daughter Nina in November 2006.  Nina contacted the Dengie Feedline for advice as like many horses that move home Harvey had lost weight and Nina wanted to know how to encourage weight gain without over-exhuberant behaviour.  This was especially important as initially, like anyone who buys a new horse, Lynn and Nina didn't really know what Harvey's personality was like.

In his new home Harvey, who has a fantastic jump, was going to take part in a range of activities from hacking to cross country so Nina was also keen to find a diet to suit his workload.

Suggested Ration:

  • Alfa-A Oil 2kg (5 large round scoops) per day
  • Natural Vitality Leisure Vits and Mins 60g or 2 measures per day.

Alfa-A Oil is pure alfalfa with a soya oil coating and added vitamin E and at 12.5MJ/kg has a calorie level comparable to a conditioning mix or cube, but without the starch.  As Alfa-A Oil is based on fibre and oil it provides the ultimate form of slow release energy that is not only useful for condition without the "fizz" but also beneficial for promoting stamina, which Harvey will need for the activities that Nina participates in.  As Harvey was initially in light work Dengie Natural Vitality Leisure Vits & Mins was also recommended to provide a balanced ration.

Nina gradually changed Harvey onto the Dengie regime and after a few weeks started to notice an improvement in his bodyweight and condition including a nice shiny coat.  Nina and Harvey have since been out competing and Nina says that "Alfa-A Oil has given Harvey enough stamina and energy to support his work, but without making him fizzy or hyperactive and he is a real pleasure to own".
