Case Study: Condition without the fizz!
Chance Cove is a 13 year old, 15.2hh ID x TB mare who competes with her owner, Elizabeth in side saddle and showing classes. Elizabeth won a competition to have Chance's ration evaluated by the Dengie Nutrition team.
Chance foaled in May and subsequently lost so much condition that her foal Daisy was weaned earlier than intended at 4 months. Post weaning Chance regained some of her condition, but Elizabeth was worried that she would lose weight when reintroduced to work with a view to competing in the National Side Saddle Championships in August.
Suggested Ration:
- Fibremix Complement 1.5kg (approximately one and a quarter large round scoops) per day
- Alfa-A Oil 2.5kg (approximately 6 large round scoops per day)
Alfa-A Oil is a blend of pure alfalfa and GM free soya oil. It was recommended for Chance as it has an energy level of 12.5MJ/kg comparable to a conditioning mix or cube. Alfa-A Oil provides "slow release" energy from fibre and oil so is much less likely to promote fizziness; a must for Chance who can become fizzy easily.
Fibremix Complement is a concentrated low starch mix based on soya, alfalfa and linseed and formulated to be fed in smaller quantities than traditional mixes. When fed at the recommended quantities no additional vitamin and mineral supplement is needed and it is also suitable for broodmares and youngstock so can be included in Daisy's ration too. Fibremix Complement contains a combination of a prebiotic, probiotic and yeast that helps to aid efficient digestion and therefore promote an overall improved condition.
Chance has been very busy competing over the past few months and at shows Elizabeth's friends have been amazed by Chance's improved condition. Elizabeth has been particularly pleased with the change in Chance's temperament and now describes her as having a temperament to die for!
