Case Study: Team Chasing
Vader is a 16.1hh, 14 year old TB cross, who team chases with Foxberry Chasers. Vader's owner Sara asked a Dengie representative for advice at a nutrition evening at her local feed store, as although Vader was fit he lacked stamina and energy for competition. He also frequently didn't finish his feed ration which Sara attributed to him not finding it very palatable plus the amount he needed to eat to get a balanced diet seemed to put him off.
Suggested Ration:
- Fibremix Complement 1.5kg (one and a half large round scoops) per day
- Alfa-A Oil 1-2kg (3-6 large round scoops) per day
To help Vader regain his top form a combination of Alfa-A Oil and Fibremix Complement was suggested. This was recommended to provide Vader with enough energy to support his work from predominantly "slow release" energy sources including oil. Research has shown that horses trained on a high oil diet take longer to fatigue thereby helping to promote stamina.
Fibremix Complement is a palatable, concentrated feed formulated to be fed in smaller quantities than traditional mixes, which makes it particularly suitable for horses with limited appetities or fussy feeders. When fed at the recommended quantities no additional vitamin and mineral supplement is needed. Fibremix Complement also contains a yeast, prebiotic and probiotic to support gut health.
Alfa-A Oil combines pure alfalfa with a GM free soya oil coating and added vitamin E for horses and ponies in hard or extended work and those that struggle to maintain condition. To encourage Vader to eat all of his feed it was suggested that a small quantity of Alfa-A Oil be fed with the Fibremix Complement and the rest left in a separate bucket for him to pick at overnight.
Vader has been on his new Dengie diet for a few months now and Sara describes him as "looking the fittest he has ever been". Vader has regained his form and has all the stamina he needs for team chasing and still really tucks into his feed every day!
