Case Study: Fibremix Easy

Conker is a 13hh Connemara cross in light work doing schooling, hacking and the occasional pony club activity. Sam described Conker as a 'busy' little pony with a tendency to 'boil' over on occasions when he e-mailed the Dengie Feedline (feeds@dengie.com) for some advice on what to feed. As Conker is so energetic he tends to lose weight quite easily and so Sam wanted something to maintain his weight without sending him 'over the top'.

Suggested Ration

  • Fibremix Easy 1.25kg (1 1/4 large round scoops)
  • Alfa-A Original 0.5kg (1 rounded large round scoop)

Fibremix Easy is a low energy coarse mix formulated to be sympathetic to the horse's digestive system with high levels of digestible fibre, including alfalfa, and lower levels of starch. Fibremix Easy is free from whole oats and barley and contains only 18% starch compared to around 25-30% starch found in many 'cool' mixes. Fibremix Easy is suitable for horses and ponies in light work that can be prone to fizziness such as Conker. When fed at the recommended quantity no additional vitamin and mineral supplement is needed.

Alfa-A Original combines pure alfalfa with a light molasses coating and has a calorie level comparable to a pasture or cool mix/cube, but without the starch. Adding Alfa-A Original to Fibremix Easy provides additional valuable nutrients and helps to slow the rate of eating. As Alfa-A Original has a comparable energy level to Fibremix Easy the total amount of mix used can be kept to a minimum.

Sam e-mailed us again three months after starting the Dengie ration to say how pleased he was. Conker has plenty of energy for the work that he is asked to do but is much less fizzy and spooky which makes riding him much more fun.
