Case Study: Maintaining Condition

Rupert's owner Caroline completed the Dengie ration evaluation service on-line on this web-site as she was looking for a fibre based diet to help her 23 year old TB gelding, Rupert maintain condition over the winter months.

Rupert was originally bred for eventing, but in his current home has competed in anything from local riding horse classes to the National Dressage Championships. Caroline is very proud of Rupert and her dream is to win the Veteran Class at the Royal Highland Show.

Rupert is an exceptional horse and a real gentleman his only downside is that he is a very fussy feeder! Rupert is in superb health and Caroline has enjoyed every minute of their 10 year partnership. In return Caroline is keen to maintain Rupert's natural health and vitality into his senior years.

A new diet of Hi-Fi Senior, Fibremix Senior and Alfa-A Original was recommended to replace Rupert's original ration of a coarsemix and chaff to help him maintain condition during the winter months. Rupert has access to grazing every day and has ad lib haylage.

Suggested Ration:
1kg of Hi-Fi Senior (approximately 4 large round scoops) per day
2kg of Fibremix Senior (approximately 2 large round scoops) per day
0.5kg of Alfa-A Original (approximately 1 large round scoop) per day

Fibremix Senior is a medium energy coarse mix specially designed for older horses and ponies. When fed at the recommended quantity Fibremix Senior will provide Rupert with the vitamins and minerals he needs and controlled energy to help maintain condition. Providing a choice of forage, by offering a bucket of Hi-Fi Senior alongside haylage and maximising on fibre in the bucket feed, Rupert has a choice of what he wants to eat, which can often help encourage fussy feeders.
