Choosing a molasses-free horse feed from Dengie


Dengie has a wide range of products that are molasses-free. Here is a quick guide to help you choose which one is right for your horse or pony.

Alfa-A Oil

Dengie’s highest-calorie fibre feed for hard-working horses and ponies or those that need to gain weight

Alfa-A Oil combines pure alfalfa with a rape seed oil coating. With 12.5MJ/kg of digestible energy, Alfa-A Oil has an energy or ‘calorie’ level comparable to a conditioning or competition mix/cube but without the sugar and starch. Dengie Alfa-A Oil is very safe to use and can even be used for horses and ponies on box rest.

Alfa-A Molasses Free

For horses and ponies working up to a moderate level or those in lower levels of work that struggle to maintain weight.

Alfa-A Molasses Free combines chopped alfalfa, oil, alfalfa pellets and the herbs mint and fenugreek. Alfa-A Molasses Free provides 11.5MJ/kg of digestible energy and is suitable for working horses and ponies or those in lower levels of work that struggle to maintain condition. Alfa-A Molasses Free is also free from preservatives.

Healthy Tummy

A nutritionally balanced high fibre feed made from pure chopped and pelleted alfalfa. Healthy Tummy contains a high specification of ingredients proven to support digestive health and maintain correct acidity levels in the digestive tract. Approved by BETA for horses and ponies prone to Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome.

Meadow Grass with Herbs & Oil

For horses and ponies working up to a moderate level or those in lower levels of work that struggle to maintain weight.

Meadow Grass with Herbs & Oil combines chopped and pelleted grasses with a rapeseed oil coating and herbal blend. Meadow Grass with Herbs provides 11.5MJ/kg of digestible energy and is suitable for working horses and ponies or those in lower levels of work that struggle to maintain condition. Meadow Grass with Herbs can be used to partially replace forage which is ideal for fussy feeders or when only poor nutritional quality forage is available. Up to 1kg per 100kg of bodyweight can be fed daily when no other high oil feeds are used. Meadow Grass with Herbs is also free from preservatives.

Alfa-Beet

A highly digestible source of fibre for improving condition, to aid hydration and for horses with poor dentition such as veterans.

Alfa-Beet combines alfalfa and unmolassed sugar beet, and must be fed soaked. Alfa-Beet has a convenient two-hour cold soak or 15 minute hot-soak time. Alfa-Beet may be fed alongside any Dengie feed to provide an additional highly digestible fibre source for condition without the fizz or to aid hydration and enhance palatability. It can be used as a partial or complete hay replacer for horses that struggle to chew long-length forages such as hay or haylage. Alfa-Beet is also free from preservatives and binders.

Pure Grass

A natural blend of chopped British-grown grasses including Fescue, Rye and Meadow Grass with absolutely nothing else added. Pure Grass allows flexible feeding as it can be used as a partial or complete hay replacer, bulk out the bucket feed, plus provide additional calories for poor doers, supplement poor grazing or limited turnout.

Alfalfa Pellets

Pure pelleted alfalfa for horses with limited fibre appetites, outdoor feeding and use in snack balls

Alfalfa Pellets contain pure pelleted alfalfa, with nothing else added. They may be fed dry or soaked to a mash and can be fed alone or in combination with another Dengie fibre feed. As Alfalfa Pellets are much more concentrated, they are particularly useful for horses and ponies with limited fibre appetites. A large horse may have up to 3kg of alfalfa-based feeds per day, which in chop form would be equivalent to 7.5 large round scoops, whereas in pellet form this is only about two scoops. Alfalfa Pellets are also free from preservatives and binders.

Pure Grass Pellets

Pure pelleted grasses for horses with limited fibre appetites, poor dentition or use in snack balls

Pure Grass Pellets contain pure pelleted grasses with nothing else added. When fed alone Pure Grass Pellets must be fed soaked and soak to a mash very quickly. When fed with a chopped fibre feed or in a snack ball that lets only small amounts of pellets out at once then grass pellets can be fed dry. Pure Grass Pellets may be used to replace some of the forage ration making them ideal for veteran horses and ponies with compromised dentition. Pure Grass Pellets are naturally sweeter than alfalfa making them great for fussy feeders. Pure Grass Pellets are free from preservatives and binders.

Hi-Fi Molasses Free

For horses and ponies at rest or in light work that require a low sugar and starch diet.

Hi-Fi Molasses Free combines chopped alfalfa, straw, oil, straw pellets and the herbs mint and fenugreek. Hi-Fi Molasses Free provides 8.5MJ/kg of digestible energy and is suitable for horses and ponies at rest or in light work, as well as those working harder that maintain condition with ease. Hi-Fi Molasses Free is also free from preservatives and binders.

Sugar 2.5% Starch 1.5%

Healthy Hooves Molasses Free

A complete feed for horses and ponies prone to laminitis or with poor hoof condition – approved by The Laminitis Trust

Healthy Hooves Molasses Free combines chopped alfalfa, straw, oil, straw pellets and garlic with a high specification of vitamins and minerals. Biotin is included at levels shown by research to be beneficial for promoting improved hoof quality. Healthy Hooves Molasses Free provides 8.5MJ/kg of digestible energy and is suitable for horses and ponies at rest or in light work. When fed at recommended levels, Healthy Hooves Molasses Free provides a balanced diet. It is also free from preservatives.
